Greenheck announces layoffs

SCHOFIELD (WAOW) -- More layoffs announced in the Wausau area.

Greenheck Fan Corporation will lay off 46 office workers. Most of those employees work at the Schofield location. This is the third layoff announced at Greenheck since December of 2008, bringing the number of laid-off employees to 400. Leaders say it's the decline of non-residential construction activity that's forced the layoffs. They say they're not sure if more are coming.

Dwight Davis, the Chairman of the Board and CEO of Greenheck, says, "The problem is, there's more uncertainty than certainty that lies ahead. I don't think there's anybody who really knows how long this recession will last, how deep or how bad it's going to get. We certainly don't know how bad we're going to be impacted."

They're not sure when business will pick up but are hoping energy-efficient fan-sales will pick up speed.

Davis adds, "They are becoming increasingly popular in schools and colleges and universities, and we think it represents an opportunity for us."

Company leaders had been waiting to see if the government stimulus money would impact them in a meaningful way- they say they don't see it making a big impact at this point. They had to make decisions on this layoff based on a plan for the coming year. They've also asked additional office staff to take five unpaid days off to ward off more cuts. These cuts over the past six months are the first downsizing the company's done in 25 years.
