Wake Up Wisconsin (WAOW)-- On May 19th, a school district referendum will be put before Stratford voters.

Superintendent Scott Winch joined us on Wake Up Wisconsin to talk about the impact on students and tax payers if the referendum passes.

The question on the ballot asks for a resolution authorizing general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $3,700,000.

According to a pamphlet released by school officials, a citizens facility study committee assessed present and future needs of the school.

They reported the following:

- Continued enrollment growth along with the SAGE program has classrooms within the district approaching or exceeding working capacity.

-Handicap accessibility is not available throughout the facilities.

-Sections of the elementary school are aging and in need of modernization. Learning space improvements, poor and failing bathroom facilities, and inefficient energy systems are a few examples of existing needs.

According to a pamphlet outlining the referendum the demonstrated needs are as follows:

Elementary School

-Remodeling of the existing bathroom facility.

-Increase energy efficiencies to reduce utility consumption.

-Utilize existing district office space for permanent early childhood classrooms with controlled ventilation.

-Improved security for student safety.

Middle School/ High School

-8 additional classrooms are needed to fulfill the State of Wisconsin requirements of SAGE and continued growth.

-Middle School science and computer labs will be located in the new addition.

-Revised entrance to provide: exterior access to high school offices; secured entrance for student safety; main entrance.

-Additional space needed for the special education department.

To break it down, the tax impact would be about $18.00 annually for a property with a fair market value of $100,000. That breaks down to about $1.50 per month.

The voting will take place on Tuesday, May 19.
