MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Gov. Jim Doyle has signed a bill banning smoking in Wisconsin bars, restaurants and work places starting in July 2010.
Doyle signed the bill in Milwaukee. He also has signing events scheduled Monday in Green Bay and Madison to mark the bill's passage. Doyle and anti-smoking advocates worked for years on getting the measure passed.
Doyle says the ban will save the state money in health care costs, improve public health and save lives.
Tribal casinos and existing cigar bars and specialty tobacco shops will not be subject to the ban, and local governments can't pass any stricter regulations.
Twenty-five other states have similar laws.
