3 Pulaski band members named to Army marching band

Associated Press - October 10, 2009 4:15 PM ET

PULASKI, Wis. (AP) - Three Pulaski High School band members will represent their school and state on the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Marching Band.

Seniors Blake Smith, Colin Duke and Kevin Ripley will be the band's three representatives from Wisconsin.

More than 1,300 applicants vied for the 97 spots.

Seventeen-year-old Duke says the honor says a lot about the school's music program. Eighteen-year-old Ripley and 17-year-old Smith say they're grateful for how much the school's program has boosted their confidence and helped them develop leadership skills.

Jon Gilliland is the president of the Wisconsin Music Educators Association. He says most states have one or two representatives on the Army band, so it's "amazing" that three students from the same school were accepted.
