SPOONER, Wis. (AP) - The University of Wisconsin-Madison's first permanent branch farming research station is gearing up for its 100th birthday.
The outpost was founded in 1909 in Spooner as farming spread throughout northern Wisconsin.
The university had already run an experimental farm on the Madison campus, but the sandier soils and shorter growing seasons in the northern part of the state presented new challenges. Researchers in Spooner went on to produce hybrid corn lines that did well in the region.
The school now runs 11 stations on about 8,000 acres statewide.
The Spooner station will hold an open house on Tuesday to celebrate.
