Wis. lawmaker's brother's firm faces forfeitures

Associated Press - October 28, 2009 6:15 PM ET

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A construction company run by a state lawmaker's brother faces $194,900 in forfeitures and legal fees for building without the proper permits.

Paul E. Olsen is the brother of Sen. Luther Olsen, R-Ripon. According to court documents, Paul Olsen is a managing partner in Olsen Brothers Enterprises LLP.

Lafayette County Circuit Judge William D. Johnston in June found the company had started building grain storage facilities on land it owned in Boscobel and Belmont with proper state erosion permits. Johnston on Monday assigned the forfeitures.

The firm's attorney, Richard J. Carlson, had argued for about $44,000 in forfeitures. He says the company wasn't as culpable as state attorneys alleged.

Luther Olsen says he has never had a role in the company.
