WAUSAU (WAOW)-- A Wausau man is honored with a prize that puts him in some very prestigious company.
Don Ryder has been awarded the National Franciscan Peace Award for 2009.
Ryder is the city of Wausau Safety Manager.
But it's his work on a life-saving water project during a drought in Africa that's getting the attention.
Ryder helps raise money and coordinate the digging of wells to provide clean, fresh water for tribes in Kenya.
He says his parents served as his public service role models.
"The example that they showed me-the way they lived their life in service to other people-so it's not out of the ordinary. I just grew up with that," says Ryder.
Past winners of the Peace Award include Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II.
