Doyle declines to sign drunk-driving pledge

MADISON (WAOW)-- Governor Jim Doyle says he doesn't drink and drive, but he's declining to sign a pledge sent by a group of students to resign of he's caught doing so.

Last week, a group of students from Schofield e-mailed Wisconsin lawmakers, asking them to sign an agreement that they'll resign if caught driving drunk.

Here is the Governor's statement on the matter:

"Everyone knows that Governor Doyle is one of the strongest opponents of drunk driving in the nation. Since his days of being a District Attorney and later as Attorney General, Governor Doyle has consistently fought to protect the public from drunk drivers, which has meant tougher standards and enforcement, and more tools for treatment. His obvious commitment to this issue, which led to the 0.08 legal blood-alcohol limit, will drive further improvements and he appreciates all those who are helping to make Wisconsin's roads safer.

"Governor. Doyle applauds the D.C. Everest High School students for their focus on this issue and supports their goals. As everyone knows, the Governor does not drink and drive. However, with respect to the pledge, he feels democracy works best when elected officials are ultimately held accountable and responsible to their voters."

So far a Manitowoc democrat is the only lawmaker to sign it.
