Lawmakers ask for review of Walker event at UW-SP

Associated Press - November 10, 2009 5:25 PM ET

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Democratic lawmakers want an investigation into whether Republican Scott Walker's gubernatorial campaign violated a law that bans fundraising in state buildings.

Reps. Marlin Schneider of Wisconsin Rapids and Amy Sue Vruwink of Milladore asked the Government Accountability Board to investigate Tuesday.

The lawmakers pointed to an event by Walker supporters at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point last week that was described in a news report as "a fundraising rally."

Wisconsin law bans the use of state-owned buildings for requesting and collecting political donations.

Walker campaign spokeswoman Jill Bader said the school gave Students for Walker permission to hold the event, which she called a recruitment drive.
