MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -- The Rib Mountain Metropolitan Sewerage District currently serves over 30,000 people in Marathon County. But it could soon be adding a few thousand more. That's if the city of Mosinee decides to join.
City leaders say Mosinee's current wastewater plant is in need of major repairs and it could be more cost effective to go through the Metro District.
"What's cost effective from a short-term, but also on a long-term basis," explained City Administrator Jeff Gates. "This may be a more long-term benefit to our residents having our sewage here, instead of rehabbing our plant."
Right now, the regional plant serves residents in Weston, Rothschild, Rib Mountain, and Kronenwetter. In order to take on Mosinee, a multi-million dollar pipeline would need to be constructed.
"The city of Mosinee would have to build what's called an interceptive sewer that would then come up and have to hook into our existing pipes," said District Superintendent Ken Johnson. "And then we'll handle the wastewater here."
District commissioners say it wouldn't change the way they currently operate, and could potentially lower sewage costs to its current customers.
"The more customers we have," Johnson said. "The more we can spread the costs amongst people and it's just for uniformity to have one facility handling all the wastewater. It's just converging governments into one."
Nothing is final yet. City leaders still need to file a pre-agreement with the district and discuss costs. They'll then weigh both option. They hope to have a decision by the end of the year.
