Doyle appoints state lawmaker Sherman as judge

Associated Press - December 4, 2009 5:15 PM ET

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Gov. Jim Doyle has appointed fellow Democratic state Rep. Gary Sherman of Port Wing to be a judge on the state Court of Appeals.

Sherman will fill the Fourth District vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Bernie Bridge effective in January.

The 60-year-old Sherman has been a member of the Legislature since 1999 representing the northern Wisconsin counties of Bayfield, Ashland, Iron and Sawyer. He is a member of the powerful budget-writing committee and is past president of the state Bar Association.

Doyle spokesman Lee Sensenbrenner says the governor will call a special election to fill Sherman's vacancy but he didn't know when it would be.

Sensenbrenner says he doesn't know when Sherman will resign.

Doyle selected Sherman over two other finalists.
