UPDATE: Mosinee schools closed, protests continue in Madison

Posted:

MOSINEE (WAOW)--Schools in Mosinee are closed Thursday because of staff absences. Superintendent Jerry Rosso says that 91 out of 150 teachers and staff called in sick.

This comes amid a third day of protests in Madison. Wisconsin lawmakers are preparing to vote on a monumental bill that would strip government workers, including teachers, of nearly all collective bargaining rights. Wednesday night, the Legislature's budget writing committee passed the measure that was introduced last week by Republican Governor Scott Walker. The bill is considered to be the nation's most aggressive anti-union proposal.

Rosso tells Newsline 9 that he doesn't know if the district will have to make up the day at the end of the year. He says he's asking for guidance from the Department of public instruction.

Even though school is canceled, Rosso says teachers and staff still need to report to school. Teachers that called in sick will need a doctors note or their pay could be docked.

Madison area schools are closed for a second day and classes have been canceled in nearly two dozen other districts too, even though school system administrators are telling teachers and staff to report to school.
