UWMC listening session

WAUSAU (WAOW)--UW-Marathon County hosted a listening session Monday to discuss proposed state budget cuts and a break-off of UW-Madison.

The New Badger partnership, outlined in Governor Scott Walkers proposed budget, would allow UW-Madison to split from the other universities in the system. Essentially, giving it public authority to make decisions separate from other campuses.

Those in favor believe UW Madison needs autonomy to stay competitive.

The Wisconsin Idea Partnership would keep the 26 campuses together.

UW Regent Mark Bradley argues a split-off of UW Madison will prevent all UW institutions from having the ability to deal with expected budget cuts. He said all schools deserve the flexibility that UW-Madison would have under the new budget.

People attending the event raised concerns about increased tuition and class sizes. If the governor's budget passes as is, Bradley says the system will face close to 340 million in cuts.

The group plans to hold other listening sessions at UW campuses.
