Postal Inspectors: "Be aware of scams"

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- When you go the mailbox, chances are at least one scammer a week sends you some mail.

Those are the findings of a survey and now state postal leaders want to give you the tools to fight back.

It's National Consumer Protection week and that's why the state's postal inspector is traveling around Wisconsin to share tips.

Lori Goren says there are some red flags that anyone can look for to determine whether or not the solicitation is a scam.

Goren says, "Is it coming from a foreign country? Does the letter contain English that isn't grammatically correct? Are they asking you to wire transfer money back to them? All of those things are red flags that it's probably going to be a scam."

This week's theme is "Dollars and Cents rated 'A' for all ages," because it doesn't matter what age you are, everyone gets scams in the mail.

Goren says the most common scams for those in their 20's are bogus school grants and scholarships, credit cards and work-at-home schemes.

The 30 to 50-year-olds often see mortgage and counterfeit checks. Seniors are targeted with charity and credit card scams.
