WAUSAU (WAOW) -- A local boy takes his interest in weather and aerospace to a higher level.
Mark Flage is part of the Stevens Point squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, an auxiliary of the Air Force. Over the weekend, he and his fellow group members sent a helium-filled weather balloon into the sky as part of an aerospace experiment.
They attached a blackberry GPS and a digital camera programmed to take a picture every 5 seconds. It captured over 4,000 images of the earth's atmosphere. The balloon sailed over 20 miles above the ground.
"The pictures have black sky where the atmosphere is so thin so the sky is black not blue," Flage explained. "From some of the pictures you can see the edge of Lake Michigan."
The balloon took off from Cadott and landed near the Nicollet National Forest.
