DEVELOPING: School district warns about the dangers candy-flavored street drugs

Posted:

SHAWANO COUNTY (WAOW)--Wittenberg-Birnamwood School leaders are warning students about drugs that look like candy.

District Superintendent Garrett Rogowski says that officials are taking a preventive approach to the drugs, noting that they haven't seen it in area schools yet.

On the district's website, officials warn parents about a drug known as strawberry quick. "There is a type of crystal meth going around that looks like strawberry pop rocks (the candy that sizzles and 'pops' in your mouth). It also smells like strawberry and it is being handed out to kids in school yards. They are calling it strawberry meth or strawberry quick," the website warns.

The district also links to an article discussing how drugs are being marketed to kids in Dallas, Texas and across the country.

Rogowski hopes the warning sparks a conversation between parents and their students about the dangers of drugs and accepting gifts and candy from strangers.
