AG Van Hollen lauded for open-records efforts

Posted:

MADISON (AP) -- A Wisconsin group that pushes for government transparency is honoring state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen and others.

The Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council bestowed its fourth annual Openness Awards on Thursday.

Van Hollen took top honors, in part for hosting statewide tutorials about Wisconsin's openness laws.

Other honorees include WKOW reporter Tony Galli in Madison. He was the first to track down video of a state lawmaker who ran a red light and hit a bicyclist.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette and University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin also won awards for their aggressive use of open-records laws.

The awards come in advance of Sunshine Week next week. That's a national initiative led by journalists to reinforce the importance of open government.
