Many local golf courses open for business

MOSINEE (WAOW) -- They say Baseball is America's favorite past-time, but we have a lot of golfers in the area too.

Thanks to the great weather we've been having, several area courses are now open for business.

During the golf season, Rick Drury and his co-workers golf every Monday here at Indianhead in Mosinee.

But he certainly didn't expect to be golfing this Monday.

He says, "I can't remember playing in March before so this is great."

Most public golf courses in the area are now open for business and players like these couldn't wait to dust off their clubs and hit the greens.

Eric Oestreich, the PGA Professional at Indianhead Golf Course says, "The phones have been ringing off the hook and people are kind of surprised that we're open this early and it's been great. It's nice to see people excited about the golf season."

Rick says he's a fan of the sport for a number of reasons, "I like being outdoors, it's moderate exercise, I like the camaraderie of playing with my friends. You meet some nice people playing on the golf course."

Obviously the customers aren't the only ones who are happy. When the sun is shining and temperatures are mild, golf course staff members are smiling too.

Oestreich says, "If we can open early or if we can stay open late, then that's what kind of makes or breaks a great season."

A season, that can be unpredictable.  That's why this group's boss said, go ahead, take half of the day off.

Rick is grateful for that.

He says, "When it's like this you take advantage of it and you never know what it's going to be tomorrow or a week from now so out we go."

Golf courses typically don't open until mid-April.  If the weather does take a turn for the worse, they'll just close and open back up again.
