WAKE UP WISCONSIN (WAOW)-- This week's winners are the students at Park Falls Elementary School.
Two sixth grade students, Casey Schmidt and Taylor Theis approached their school's guidance counselor and expressed their desire to raise money for breast cancer research.
After brainstorming ideas, the students came up with a fundraiser called "Penny Day".
Last week, the student's collected different coins for a week.
For example, Monday was Penny Day, Tuesday Nickel Day, Wednesday, Dime Day...and so on.
After just one week, the 354 students raised 723 dollars and 93 cents!
All the money raised is going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
The project was completely student driven.
Faculty members say it was a delight to see students take on a leadership role in something they believe in.
This isn't all the student body participates in, throughout the year they take on a variety of projects to benefit the Park Falls community.
They collected pop tabs for 4 months, and ended up bringing in 550-thousand tabs.
All of the tabs are being donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
In addition, during the holidays instead of doing gift exchanges with one another, the students chose to give of themselves, and brought in 5 dollars each for their classrooms to donate to a charity of their choice.
Many students also brought in food donations for local pantries also during the holidays.
This is a great example of students thinking outside the box, unselfishly giving to others, and working to help out the community.
