Class of the Week Winner: May 1

Wake Up Wisconsin (WAOW)--This week's winners are the students in D.C. Everest's Literacy Foundation class and Ms. Bindl's class at Mountain Bay Elementary.

The classes were awarded a grant called "Read it and Pass it on" from the D.C. Everest Area Education Foundation.

The goal is for students to have access to books that match their reading level so they can become confident readers.

With the grant, the students were able to go the Barnes and Noble with elementary students and purchase more than $ 1,300 worth of books.

As part of the project, the students chose books based on their interests and reading levels.

They ended up getting 184 books with the money, and still have 200 more dollars left over to buy new books.

With the new, selected books, students have a check-out system in their classroom.

This year for the first time the project also included Schofield, Mountain Bay, and Weston elementary schools

We had the opportunity to visit with both the high schoolers and the elementary students at Mountain Bay...both groups of students said they had a lot of fun with the project, and that it was a rewarding experience.

Their teachers say the high school students interacted great with the 3rd graders and did a great job at being role models.

If you would like your school to be on Wake Up Wisconsin be sure to email us at with all your nominations.

Every Friday at 6:30 on Wakeup...we recognize a different school for their accomplishments.
