WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW)--- This week's winner's are the first graders at Our Lady Queen of Heaven School in Wisconsin Rapids.

Back in September, the school was awarded a grant from the "Community Foundation of Greater South Wood County" for a program called "Grandfriends".

It's an intergenerational project that uses the strengths of one generation to meet the needs of another.

The Grandfriends project really bridges the generation gap.

It brings together first graders and the elderly.

Since the Fall, every month the students have taken part in several activities, everything from putting on a Thanksgiving play...to making polar fleece scarves.

This week, they wrapped up the year with a special farewell by performing square dances at a social.

The students made invitations for their parents and grandfriends, so that everybody could meet each other.

The students shared two different square dances with the crowd, and did a great job of remembering all the steps.

The program organizer, Peg Wasshausen, has been doing the program for 20 years, and says the goal is to have the students interact with elders, be stimulated, and learn how to be there for others.

We had an opportunity to visit the students and take part in the square dance social.

It's truly touching to see young kids reach out to their elders in such a gracious and respectful way.

We had a blast watching them interact with everyone.

It's very obvious the children and seniors have grown close, and share special friendships.

If you would like your school to be on Wake Up Wisconsin be sure to email us at news@waow.com with all your nominations.

Every Friday at 6:30 on Wakeup...we recognize a different school for their accomplishments.
