WAUSAU (WAOW)--At Tuesday night's Wausau City Council meeting, alderpersons voted to accept a peace statue as a gift but not before adding a little legislative red tape.
The statue was designed by Egyptian Fulbright scholar and Northcentral Technical College student Moustafa Saleh. He hoped to leave one statue here in Wausau and erect another in Egypt when he returns home.
Saleh wants to convey a message of peace and global unity. The sculpture is designed to look like a dove holding a globe in its wings. On each wing the word "peace" will be inscribed; one in English and one in Arabic.
After two Capital Improvements and Street Maintenance (CISM) meetings committee members voted to accept the gift. The council agreed by a vote of 11-1 but not before adding an amendment stating that the council must enact a policy that dictates what types of statues the city can accept as gifts.
