Powerful quake topples homes along Caribbean coast in Honduras, Belize

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) -- A powerful earthquake felt across much of Central America has left at least two people dead and dozens injured.

The magnitude-7.1 quake struck early this morning off the Caribbean coast of Honduras. At least 24 homes collapsed in Honduras, and some others fell in seaside towns in Belize. In Belize City, residents ran outside as glasses and pictures crashed off shelves.

Officials say a water tower toppled in the Belize town of Independence and electricity was out all the way to the Mexican border. Electricity, phones and Internet connections have been reportedly cut across a large part of Honduras.

There's also word that the Democracy Bridge in Honduras collapsed. The bridge spans the country's largest river, and is one of two connecting the country's second-largest city with the rest of the country. Officials are checking the other bridge to make sure it's safe.

Honduran authorities say two young people died after their homes collapsed. There are unconfirmed reports of two other deaths. About 40 people have been injured.
