Frazier Wins It in Extra Innings

WAUSAU, WI - May 31st, 2009 - (stats) The Wisconsin Woodchucks picked up their first victory of the season in thrilling fashion as Troy Frazier (Kentucky) laced a single down the right field line to score Chris Slater (Baylor) in the bottom of the 10th to seal up the 4-3 victory.

Jeremy Richter (UW-Stevens Point) sent the fans to their feet in the first inning as he blasted a Danny Jimenez (John A. Logan) fastball over the left field wall to give the ‘Chucks the early lead.

Both teams traded runs in the third and fifth innings as the ‘Chucks took a 3-2 lead into the top of the ninth.  The MoonDogs were able to pound out three hits in the frame, and Danny Miller (Minnesota State) was able to score the game-tying run.

The tie didn't last long though as singles by Slater and Braswell setup the dramatic finish in front of the home crowd.

The Woodchucks shook off their offensive struggles as they pounded out 13 hits. Chad Wright (Kentucky), Kale Kiser (Nebraska), Mike Mutcheson (New Mexico JC) and Frazier all had two hits in the contest. The MoonDogs were led by Edgar Molina's (Southwestern CC) 3-for-4 day at the plate.

‘Chucks starter Brandon Koenigstein (Creighton) was solid on the hill as he went seven innings and allowed just two runs on five hits. Bryce Shafter (Valparaiso) threw a scoreless inning in relief before giving the ball to Jeremy Brewer (Central Arkansas) who recorded the win.

The Woodchucks will host the La Crosse Loggers for a two-game set starting tomorrow before heading to Duluth for a pair of road games.

The Wisconsin Woodchucks are a member of the Northwoods League, a college wood bat summer league featuring players from across the country.  Baseball America named the Northwoods League as one of the premier summer collegiate baseball leagues in the country.  For group outing / ticket information contact the Woodchucks office at 715-845-5055 or visit the Woodchucks website at www.woodchucks.com.
