Suspect jailed in Kansas abortion doctor's killing

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- A suspect in the killing of a well-known doctor who performed late-term abortions is being held without bail today on murder and other charges.

Meantime, investigators are trying to learn more about his background, including the extent of his connections to anti-abortion groups.

A man with the same name as the suspect has a criminal record and a background of anti-abortion postings on sympathetic Web sites.

Dr. George Tiller was serving as an usher during morning services yesterday when he was shot in the foyer of Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita, Kansas.

Police say the gunman fired one shot at Tiller and threatened two other people who tried to stop him.

The suspect, identified by one law enforcement agency as Scott Roeder, was taken into custody some 170 miles away in a Kansas City suburb and has since been returned to Wichita.
