France's transportation minister says there's "real pessimism" about the fate of an Air France jet that disappeared over the Atlantic nearly 200 miles off the coast of Brazil.More >>
SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- An Air France official says the airline has lost contact with a plane carrying 228 people from Brazil to Paris.
The airline says Air France flight 447 was flying bound for Paris from Rio de Janeiro. It was carrying 216 passengers and 12 crew members.
Brazil's air force says it's begun a search began this morning near the Brazilian archipelago of Fernando de Noronha (FAYR'-nan-doh jee nor-OHN'-ya). It says the plane disappeared about 186 miles northeast of the coastal Brazilian city of Natal.
An airline spokeswoman says "Air France shares the emotion and worry of the families concerned." She says the airline has installed an information center at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport for the families of those aboard.
The airport says the flight was scheduled to arrive at 5:15 a.m. Eastern time.
