Senate to debate budget today

MADISON (AP) -- Debate of the $62 billion state budget is scheduled to start this afternoon in the state Senate.

No Republicans are expected to vote for the budget that calls for more than $2 billion in tax and fee increases to balance a projected $6.6 billion shortfall.

The Assembly passed the budget early Saturday morning with no help from Republicans. Two Assembly Democrats voted against it.

Senate Democrats are expected to approve a number of changes to what the Assembly passed. A special committee of lawmakers from both the Senate and Assembly would then have to meet to work out a compromise before it heads to Gov. Jim Doyle for his consideration.

The new budget is supposed to take effect July 1.
