WAUSAU  (WAOW) -- From a press release from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, as part of national efforts to create jobs and provide immediate economic benefits to Wisconsin and the country, Governor Jim Doyle has signed an $11 million contract to improve 9.1 miles of I-39 between WIS 34 and the Rothschild Business 51 interchange in Marathon County.

The project was advanced using funds provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.   "Wisconsin is helping to lead the way to economic recovery by putting people to work quickly on projects that improve the state's transportation infrastructure," Governor Doyle said.

American Asphalt of Mosinee is the prime contractor of the project. Crews will repave I-39 with new asphalt.

Construction on the project is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 22 and is scheduled for completion in July 2010.   During construction, I-39 will remain open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter northbound and southbound lane closures from 6 a.m. Mondays to noon on Fridays. The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 55 mph during weekdays.
