STEVENS POINT (WAOW)- The area now has a new junior hockey team as the Central Wisconsin Saints are set to kick off their inaugural season in August. The Saints are holding tryouts this weekend and 40 plus players hit the ice at Willett Arena in Stevens Point on Saturday afternoon and evening. Central Wisconsin is part of the Great Lakes Junior Hockey League which is sanctioned by United States Hockey. All the organizers say a junior team in the area is crucial to player development.
Says GM Joe Zuniga, "That's really a great opportunity for our kids. One of the things that happened in the past is our 18 and older players were actually going to Canada and other states to get that junior capability to play and go through that development process, so this for them is a great great opportunity."
