Groups lobby for driver's card for immigrants

MADISON (AP) -- People who favor providing special driver's cards for illegal immigrants are pushing the issue at the state Capitol.

The state Asssembly included the proposal in the state budget it recently passed, but the state Senate knocked it out when it passed the budget last week. A committee now is trying to reach a compromise budget.

Democrats hold a majority in both houses, and one of them, Senator Tim Carpenter of Milwaukee, wasn't swayed during a meeting with advocates for the proposal who rallied in Madison yesterday.

Carpenter says 90 percent of constituents who have contacted his office since 2005 have been against giving driving privileges to illegal immigrants. The critics have included some immigrants who have gone through the lengthy process to become citizens.

Supporters of the proposal warned Carpenter and other Democrats they will alienate the growing bloc of Latino voters if they don't switch their stance on this issues and others affecting that group.
