Football coach fatally shot, former player charged

PARKERSBURG, Iowa (AP) -- Police charge 24-year-old Iowa man in fatal shooting of his former high school football coach.

One of Iowa's best-known high school football coaches has been shot to death at the school where he coached for 34 years.

Ed Thomas was fatally shot in the weight room at the school in Parkersburg, about 80 miles northeast of Des Moines. Authorities say about 50 students were in the school at the time, but no one else was hurt.

Authorities say an adult male was arrested a short time later.

Thomas was the 2005 NFL high school football coach of the year, and four of his former players are in the NFL. One of them, Detroit defensive end Jared DeVries, appeared shaken as he walked off the Lions' practice field today.

Thomas compiled a career record of 292-84 in 37 seasons as a head coach.

The executive director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association says Thomas will be remembered "not so much for his many wins on the field, but for the exemplary manner in which he coached kids."

Iowa Gov. Chet Culver says "the state and national coaching fraternity has suffered a devastating loss."
