Dalai Lama celebrates 74th birthday

NEW DELHI (AP) -- The Dalai Lama turns 74 today, and he says with all the prayers being said for him he might live to at least 100.

In New Delhi and Dharmsala -- where he's lived in exile for 50 years -- hundreds of Tibetan exiles chanted prayers and sang songs to mark the birthday. The Dalai Lama accepted scores of silk scarves, and watched a musical performance.

As he ages, there are concerns among Tibetan leaders about who will lead Tibetan exiles after his death, and push their cause. He's had a number of medical problems in the past two years and some fear that China might appoint a new Dalai Lama after his death.

The Dalai Lama and his followers fled Tibet following a failed 1959 uprising against Chinese rule over the Himalayan region.
