Getting the Balloon Rally off the ground

WAUSAU (WAOW) --  Whether or not the weather cooperates with this week's Balloon Rally and Glow organizers are busily setting up for the event.

There's no guarantee that hot air balloons will make it up at this year's Balloon Glow and Rally in Wausau, although organizers do non-rain dances for a year before the event kicks off to ward off bad weather.

"This event is very weather dependent."  Leah Alters, Executive Director of Wausau Area Events, says the set up must happen anyway.

"We have the stage that comes from the 400 block, all the garbage cans, all the toilets that come in. So, this space fills up very quickly and we feel like we need more space even though right now it looks a little blank."

Most of that space.. is taken up by tents and the stuff that goes under them.

It takes a lot to get the balloon glow off the ground, from unloading tables to putting out no smoking signs.

Alters adds, "It doesn't go good with propane."

The prep work takes months.  Not just days.  Mostly, so organizers can find events that will go on-- rain or shine.

John Chmiel, Wausau Downtown Airport Manager says, "The BBQ always goes off without a hitch. That's a great activity and I think last we proved that. Sometimes you can have bad weather and the BBQ still guarantees that the event will be a success."

As organizers hope this year will be too.

Gates open at 5:00 PM, Thursday, July 9th.  Most events are free.
