MADISON, WI (PRESS RELEASE) - Lizzie Machurick, a 5-9 defensive specialist from Little Chute, Wis., has joined the Wisconsin volleyball team for the 2009 season, Coach Pete Waite announced today. Machurick will have three years of eligibility remaining after transferring from Kishwaukee College in Malta, Ill.
"We're excited to have Lizzie joining us this season," said Waite. "She's actually a player we knew about when she attended our camps in high school and we were impressed with her athleticism and work ethic. We're hoping that Lizzie's skill and experience in the back row can help raise the level of our ball handling right away."
At Kishwaukee, Machurick (ma SHER ik) was a member of the 2008 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II national championship team. The Kougars won the Arrowhead Conference in 2008 and also the NJCAA Region IV championship. Machurick earned NJCAA Academic All-America honors. "Now Lizzie has the experience of having played at the junior college level at Kishwaukee and was able to help them win a national championship," said Waite. "Her college coach at Kishwaukee was Ron Sweet and he had nothing but great things to say about her." Machurick competed at Xavier High School in Appleton, Wis., earning honorable mention all-state honors as a sophomore. She was a second-team all-conference honoree as a sophomore and earned honorable mention all-area recognition by the Appleton Post Crescent. Despite being slowed by knee injuries during her junior and senior seasons, Machurick set Xavier's school record for digs per match. The Hawks qualified for two state tournaments during Machurick's years, finishing second in 2006. Xavier also won conference, regional and sectional titles during her sophomore and junior seasons. She served as a team captain as a senior and team co-captain as a junior. Machurick was a four-time academic all-star. She also competed in track, where she was a four-time state qualifier, earning medals in the 400-meter relay as a sophomore and junior and in the 800-meter relay as a senior. Machurick played club volleyball with Kaepa Fox Cities Elite until her senior season when she competed with Wisconsin Power.
