Big Inning Lifts Woodchucks Past Bombers
WAUSAU, WI - July 14th 2009 - After trailing 4-0 after one inning of play, the Woodchucks put up six runs in the top of the third and never looked back as they defeated the Battle Creek Bombers by a final score of 8-4 Tuesday night.
It was a rough beginning for ‘Chucks starter Bryce Butt (Ohio), as the Bombers rallied for four hits and put up four runs in the bottom of the first to give Battle Creek the lead right out of the gate.
In that six run third inning, the Woodchucks started things off with four straight hits to get the rally going. When the dust settled, the ‘Chucks posted five hits in the inning and used them along with one Bombers error to push across six runs in the frame, their second highest single inning total this year.
The Woodchucks added another run in the sixth when Travis Whitmore (Pittsburgh) singled and scored on a single by Joey Hainsfurther (Baylor). They added the final run in the eighth when Brett Krill (UCLA) ripped a ground-rule double to score Hainsfurther.
Krill was the team's top performer offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs. Mike Murphy had two hits and two RBIs for the Bombers in defeat.
Butt earned the victory after settling down and allowing the four runs (one earned) on six hits and striking out seven. Anthony Drobnick picked up the save after throwing three shutout innings in relief.
Bombers starter Dan Holcomb suffered the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on two hits in two innings.
The ‘Chucks will take on the Bombers in the second game of the series tomorrow at 11:00 am EST (10:00 am CST).
