WAUSAU, WI (PRESS RELEASE) - July 13th 2009 - The Wisconsin Woodchucks have announced that catcher Ben Long and pitcher Bryce Shafer have been named to the 2009 Northwoods League South Division All-Star Team.
Long, who is in his second stint with the Woodchucks, spent 15 games earlier this season with the Madison Mallards before joining the Woodchucks. The UW-Milwaukee junior's season totals include a .271 batting average, five doubles, 18 RBIs and his six home runs which ranks third in the Northwoods League. Long has spent time at catcher and first base this season, and will be making his all-star game debut in Thunder Bay.
Shafer, a right-handed pitcher out of Valparaiso, has been used in many roles on the mound this year for the Woodchucks. After starting the year in the bullpen, Shafer has flourished as a starter. In 11 appearances, including six starts, Shafer is 3-2 with a 2.37 ERA in 49.1 innings of work. He also has struck out 41 batters while walking 22.
All are encouraged to follow Long and Shafer at this year's all-star game which will take place in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada at 6:05 pm Eastern Time on July 21st.
The Wisconsin Woodchucks are a member of the Northwoods League, a college wood bat summer league featuring players from across the country.
