Mike Gwidt dominates Late Models at Golden Sands on Friday night

(PRESS RELEASE)-  MIKE BARRETT, GOLDEN SANDS- While the Late Models took the night off Super Stock Racer Michael Gwidt of Wausau made the most of his race night Friday night by sweeping every event he competed in; fast time, a fast heat win, and a feature win ahead of his primary rival in Super Stock racing, Colin Reffner. Gwidt began the night by squeaking ahead of Reffner's time, then thrilled the crowd with a last lap pass to take the win for the heat, and moved through traffic with a very hooked-up car to the front of a field that seemed bogged down compared to his and Reffner's cars. Dean Burby started out looking like a runaway winner, but competition from Brian Weinfurter and Kyle Davis soon had his attention. Gwidt's smoking-fast car moved around Burby with about twelve laps to go, but it was Reffner who looked perhaps even better as he drove a great race to catch the leading Gwidt. As Gwidt led, Reffner caught him with about 4 laps to go, but could not make the pass, and ended up 2nd. Burby hung on for 3rd, and Brian Weinfurter and Kyle Davis maintained 4th and 5th. Reffner and Gwidt are now tied atop the points grouping, and Golden Sands now has a Super Stock points race that is even tighter than the 1 point differential for the Late Models!

4 Cylinder Stock driver Joachim Mangen survived 4 wide racing and even the mistake of continuing to race after the checkered flag flew to bring home 1st, followed by Kelley Sankey. Mangen's 2nd win this year puts him closer to Kelley Sankey, and 1 point ahead of Kevin Burris. 3rd place went to Burris, and Lucas Betro and Bryce Mancheski finished 4th and 5th. Burris posted the fastest time.

The Mod class of 4 Cylinder racers saw Randal WIlhorn of Nekoosa post his 7th fast time in a row, but 1 lap into that event the skies opened up in a big way and the night was literally awash with rain.

Big 8 Drivers visited Golden Sands, and Ryan Carlson posted the win ahead of a fine field of drivers including 3rd place finisher Jeremy Lepak, up-and-coming Ross Kenseth and fast qualifier Skylar Holzhausen.

Friday July 31 is the WCS Sands 100 at Golden Sands, with Sport Trucks, Vintage Racers, 4CS, Figure 8's, Skid Car Races, and Cruisers.
