Chucks win fifth in six games with 3-2 victory over Green Bay

WAUSAU, WI - July 26th 2009 (PRESS RELEASE) - In a game dominated by starting pitchers, the Wisconsin Woodchucks (7-12) jumped on the Green Bay Bullfrogs (7-13) bullpen with two runs in the eighth to pick up a 3-2 victory in the final meeting between the teams Sunday afternoon at Athletic Park

All-stars Bryce Shafer and Dixon Anderson turned in gems in this one, as the game was a 0-0 stalemate through five innings of play.

The Woodchucks scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Jeremy Richter (UW-Stevens Point) reached on a wild pitch after a strikeout, the third of the inning for Anderson, Ben Long (UW-Milwaukee) singled to put runners at first and second. Following a passed ball to move the runners up a base, Troy Frazier (Cumberland) hit an RBI single to score Richter and give the ‘Chucks a 1-0 lead.

The Bullfrogs finally got to Shafer in the eighth after Aaron Conway started things off with a one-out single. The following batter Riley Henricks singled and the ball got away from left fielder Brett Krill (UCLA) which allowed Conway to score from first. Two batters later, Paul Hoenecke recorded a run-scoring single to score Henricks and give the Bullfrogs a 2-1 lead.

But the Woodchucks did not waste any time responding to the threat. Travis Whitmore (Pittsburgh) greeted reliever Steve Crnkovich with a single to start the rally in the bottom of the eighth. Krill then redeemed himself with a ringing RBI double to left center to tie things up at 2-2. Long then followed two hitters later with a single to right field which scored Krill and proved to be the game winner.

Shafer, who was stuck with a no-decision, went 7.2 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts. Anthony Drobnick picked up the win after throwing a perfect 1.1 innings in relief.

Anderson went seven innings, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out nine. Crnkovich, who took the loss, allowed two runs on three hits in .2 innings of work. Paul Hoenecke led the way for the Bullfrogs, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI in defeat.

The ‘Chucks will now welcome in the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers for a pair of games starting tomorrow with the first pitch set for 6:35 pm.

Chad Wright (Kentucky) had three hits for the Woodchucks while Long recorded two hits and the game-winning RBI in the win.
