Cambridge PD: Race not mentioned in 911 call

BOSTON (AP) -- Cambridge's police commissioner says the 911 caller who reported a possible break-in at the home of black Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. did not mention race during the call.

Commissioner Robert Haas told The Boston Globe that he expects some version of that 911 call to be released within the next few days.

Haas' comments back up a statement issued by a lawyer speaking on behalf of Lucia Whalen, the Malden woman who made the July 16 call that led to the arrest of Gates on a disorderly conduct charge and the resulting national firestorm.

Attorney Wendy Murphy said Whalen -- who has not spoken publicly -- only saw the backs of two men on Gates' porch and did not know their race. Murphy said Whalen was aware of recent break-ins in the area.
