MADISON, WI (PRESS RELEASE) - The Wisconsin women's basketball team has announced its 2009 non-conference schedule, which includes 11 games to serve as a tune-up before the Big Ten Conference season. This year's non-conference schedule includes five regular season home games at the Kohl Center, a trip to Eugene, Ore., for the BTI Tip-Off Tournament and one home exhibition game against UW-Oshkosh. "We are looking forward to a very competitive non-conference schedule to help prepare us for the Big Ten season," UW head coach Lisa Stone said. "We're excited about the tournament out in Oregon, which should bring us some new competition. We always look forward to the three in-state games as well. Those three games and the Big Ten/ACC Challenge are always an important part of our schedule. I think we've got a nice balance in our non-conference schedule to help prepare us for an exciting Big Ten season." The Badgers welcome the Titans of UW-Oshkosh to the Kohl Center, Nov. 8, for the lone exhibition game of the season. UW assistant coach Kathi Bennett spent seven years at UW-Oshkosh as the team's head coach from 1989-96. During that time, Bennett's teams went 94-17 overall and won five Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (WIAC) titles. The season officially tips off, Nov. 15 against North Dakota. The Fighting Sioux are part of the Great West Conference and finished the 2008-09 season 18-11 overall. This will be the first meeting between the two teams. After UND, the Badgers play their first of three in-state rivalry games when they travel 70 miles to the east to take on UW-Milwaukee, Nov. 19. This will be just the fourth time in series history that the Badgers play on the Panthers' home court. Wisconsin leads the all-time series 18-1, including a 71-69 double-overtime thriller in Madison last year. Wisconsin returns to the Kohl Center to host back-to-back games before leaving for its annual Thanksgiving tournament. The Badgers take on Cleveland State, a team that finished the 2008-09 season 19-13 overall, Nov. 22. The Vikings are coached by Kate Peterson Abiad, who was a former UW assistant coach for six seasons under Jane Albright. UW-Green Bay then comes to town, Nov. 24 for the second in-state rivalry game. The Phoenix played in the NCAA tournament last season and finished the season 29-4 overall. One of the Phoenix's four losses came at the hands of the Badgers' 59-47 victory in Green Bay last season. The Badgers travel to Eugene, Ore., for the BTI Tip-Off Tournament from Nov. 27-29. The tournament includes Portland State (23-10, WNIT participant, Big Sky Conference), Cal State Fullerton (10-20, Big West Conference) and Oregon (9-21, Pac-10 Conference). Wisconsin has never faced Portland State or Cal State Fullerton and is 1-1 all-time against Oregon. Wisconsin stays on the road following the holiday tournament and visits Raleigh, N.C., to take on North Carolina State for the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Dec. 3. One more non-conference road game awaits when the Badgers head back to Milwaukee to play Marquette on Dec. 11. The Badgers also defeated the Golden Eagles last year to sweep all three in-state Division I schools for the first time in Stone's tenure. The 2009 non-conference season wraps up in mid-December at the Kohl Center. Wisconsin welcomes SIU-Edwardsville, Dec. 13 and then Robert Morris University, Dec. 15. Both teams are new opponents for the Badgers. UW assistant coach Ty Margenthaler is a SIU-Edwardsville alum and also served as an assistant coach at the school from 1997-99.
