Doyle: New Chrysler owner won't buy Kenosha plant

MADISON (AP) -- Gov. Jim Doyle says Fiat is unlikely to exercise its option to buy the Chrysler car-engine plant in Kenosha.

Doyle on Thursday called the news disappointing but not surprising.

Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy last month under a new partnership with the Italian automaker Fiat Group SpA.

Chrysler owned the plant prior to the bankruptcy. When Fiat bought Chrysler in June it preserved the option of also buying the Kenosha engine factory by July 31.

Without the purchase, the facility remains on schedule to close October 2010, ending 800 jobs.

Doyle says Fiat has committed to keeping the Kenosha plant in mind for future manufacturing opportunities.
