Woodchucks Drop Tough One to Express
WAUSAU, WI - August 3rd, 2009 - The Eau Claire Express scored four unanswered runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth, to defeat the Wisconsin Woodchucks 4-3 Monday night at Carson Park.
Wisconsin took control early on, scoring three runs in the second inning. Ben Long (UW-Milwaukee) and Jeremy Richter (UW-Stevens Point) hit back-to-back singles to start the rally. After a sacrifice bunt, Carson Vitale (Creighton) ripped a double to score both runs and give the Woodchucks a 2-0 lead. Following a single to advance Vitale to third, Khayyan Norfork (Tennessee) hit a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 3-0.
The Express mounted their comeback in the fourth. Brooks Pinckard led the inning off with a double and was followed by back-to-back singles by Andrew Leonard and Nate Baumann, the latter of which scored Pinckard. Bobby Rinard and Drew Heithoff then each registered sacrifice flyouts which evened the score at 3-3.
The scored stayed that way until the Express pushed across the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Kole Calhoun led off the inning with a triple to deep center field. Pinkard followed that in the next at-bat with an RBI single with gave the Express the lead and the eventual win.
‘Chucks starter Chris Licon did not receive a decision after allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings. Dan Gardo suffered the loss after allowing a run on two hits in relief.
Louis Head, who recorded the victory, threw two scoreless innings in relief of starter Jon Ringenberg who allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings. Jason Ganek picked up his third save in the victory.
Eric Fritz (UW-Stevens Point) and Richter each recorded two hits in the game while Vitale led the team with two RBIs. Matt Fritz, Pinckard, and Baumann each recorded a pair of hits in the victory for Eau Claire.
The Woodchucks are off tomorrow but will return to action when they take on the Waterloo Bucks in Waterloo Wednesday at 1:05 pm.
