BAGHDAD (AP) -- Iraqi officials say at least 45 people have been killed and hundreds wounded in a wave of bombings near the northern city of Mosul and elsewhere in Iraq, including Baghdad.

Police and hospital officials say the deadliest strike was a double truck bombing that killed at least 28 people and wounded 138 in a Shiite minority community near Mosul. They say the two trucks exploded nearly simultaneously and less than 500 yards apart this morning.

The explosions left a seven-foot crater and reduced the neighborhood to piles of bricks, twisted metal and smoking debris.

No one is claiming responsibility for the Mosul-area attack, but it bears the hallmarks of al-Qaida in Iraq and other Sunni insurgents who remain active in the area.

Officials also say bombs exploded early today in Baghdad neighborhoods, killing at least 17 people. Dozens of other people were wounded.
