Veterans Affairs wants purchases investigated

MADISON (AP) -- The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs is asking the attorney general's office to investigate about $820,000 worth of unauthorized purchases.

According to a memo written Wednesday by Legislative Fiscal Bureau Director Bob Lang, there was no spending authority under the state budget for a variety of purchases made by the Veterans Home at King.

State law prohibits an agency from spending more than is budgeted.

The money went toward buying equipment including a $250,000 fire truck and $210,000 worth of storage systems. Lang says those purchases left the department without enough money to pay for ongoing operating costs.

Acting Veterans Affairs Secretary Ken Black declined to comment since the state Department of Justice has been asked to investigate the matter.
