Kohl gives update on healthcare, takes earful from audience

EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) -- Senator Herb Kohl (D-Wisconsin) was at CVTC Monday in front of an invite only audience of citizens and health care professionals. A number of people spoke out against how health care reform is being handled on Capitol Hill.

When asked how what he heard Monday compared to what he's hearing throughout the state, Senator Kohl had this to say, "Wherever I go I find people want to express their opinions, they have strong opinions one way or another, and it's in the nature of our democracy that they have the opportunity to express themselves, particularly to public officials."

Kohl took heard comments from people like Scott Kniprath from Eau Claire who presented different alternatives to reform healthcare. "My argument for the senator was that if we change the premises' of the debate from a health care crisis, to one of a healthcare funding crisis, we can more accurately focus on getting to the root of the problem."

The senator gave an update on how the process is going in Washington. He says there's only one bipartisan bill being worked on right now, and that's being done by the senate finance committee. Kohl believes that bill should be completed sometime next month.

He expects a number of large bullet points to be left out of that bill including: the public option, a living will option, and government regulated prescription drug prices. Kohl thinks a health care reform bill with compromises will be passed around the end of the year.
