VW, Audi recall

by WAOW Staff

NATIONWIDE (ABC)-- Two popular car makers are recalling thousands of brand new vehicles. Transmission problems in some Audis and Volkswagons are causing cars to suddenly lose power and stall in traffic.

From Maryland to California, the problems are frightening. Those who've experienced it say you're in motion and suddenly you don't have any acceleration.

Volkswagon vehicles lose power for no apparent reason.

Dennis Capolongo Jetta had just 623 miles on it. He said, "There was no forward motion at all with the car. The engine was just racing and the transmission was just completely slipping. I could see that these cars were just barreling down on us."

Other VW drivers have posted videos of their close calls on YouTube. Many say the park, reverse, neutral and drive lights flash on and off like crazy when their transmission goes haywire. They've even coined a name for it: the flash of death.

The Center For Auto Safety says it's one of the more alarming safety defects it has seen. The government's investigation includes any 2008 or 2009 VW Jetta, Eos, GTI or R32 with direct a direct shift gearbox transmission. Plus 2009 Audi A3, TT and TT Roadsters that contain the same DSG transmission.
