UNDATED (AP) -- Those depleted car lots are a sight for sore eyes at auto dealerships from Vermont to California on the final weekend of the Cash for Clunkers program.
Crowds have rushed to trade in gas guzzlers as the $3 billion program draws to a close.
The hectic pace of the rebate program accelerated in the final weekend, after the government announced the program would end at 8 p.m. EDT Monday, two weeks earlier than expected.
Adding to the urgency, some dealers had said they would stop Cash for Clunkers sales even earlier.
Some people say they considered making the move earlier but dragged their feet until the last moment.
One California dealer says some employees worked past midnight to wrap up last-minute deals.
