Goat found in trunk finds happy ending with Eleva family

ELEVA (WQOW) - Authorities say they plan to ticket the woman who was caught with a goat in her trunk in Winona, Minn.

The Winona city attorney's office says police will issue citations to a Saint Paul woman and a man from La Crosse. They'll be ticketed for cruelty and transportation and mistreatment of animals, both misdemeanors.

The goat had been spray-painted purple and gold and had a number four shaved into it's side. Now the goat has found a new home right here in our area.

Just a few days ago, a goat was bound in the trunk of a car in Winona, Minn., destined to be slaughtered. Now, Brett the goat is enjoying his new home on a farm in Eleva.

"He's very friendly, the most lovable goat you ever saw," says Carlene Schultz of Eleva.

Duane and Carlene Schultz were contacted by Winona Animal Control on Saturday, and by Sunday, Brett was on the farm, fighting for food with other goats and chickens.

"They just happened to find us, and I'm glad they did because he will have a very good home here," adds Carlene.

She says she considers herself a Brett Favre fan. Her farm even devoted a corn maze to the signal caller last year. But she says she can't wrap her mind around why someone would do this to an animal.

"People take their sports a little too seriously and don't realize it's just a game. You don't have to involve poor defenseless animals in this whatsoever," she says.

Brett still has the number four shaved in his side, and his fur is still purple and gold, but Carlene says he is showing no other ill effects from the incident on Friday.

"He comes right up to the fence, he's a very very friendly goat. So, he will get lots of attention, lots of loving. That's what he needs," says Carlene. "The happy ending is that he has a wonderful home here."

Brett is one of 16 goats on the Schultz's farm. The farm also has llamas, chickens and a donkey.
