Loyal (WQOW) -- The Loyal School District sends its students home after the city loses power.
According to Xcel Energy, the outage happened at 9:15 AM when a squirrel came into contact with energized equipment on the transformer. The transformer blew a fuse as a result. "Next to storm damage, animals are the second most common cause of outages, and it's more often squirrels than birds," says Xcel spokesperson Liz Wolf Green.
Power was restored across Loyal just after 11 AM.
887 customers were affected. One of those customers is the Loyal K-12 School. The district started sending its nearly 520 kids home at 10:30 Friday morning.
