Sumo Wrestling For The Needy

WAUSAU (WAOW)--Sumo wrestling highlighted a 4 week campaign to raise money for the needy at Saint Clare's Hospital in Weston. In the hospital atrium you could hear laughter and see big smiles as the Chief Medical Officer Larry Hegland, M.D. took on the top fundraisers in the wrestling ring.

While it was designed to be fun, it's for a very serious cause.  Event Organizer, Matt Huppert, says, "We've seen an increase in families that need our assistance from the hospital foundation, through our compassionate care fund."  In the past, Huppert says the fund has paid for needy patients to get the prescription medicines they need or transportation costs.

During the past month, hospital workers have been giving to the "Give One" program. Half of the money raised goes to the Compassionate Care Fund in the Foundation of Saint Clare's Hospital.    The other half of the money raised is earmarked for the Marathon County United Way. The agency serves dozens of non-profit agencies in Marathon County.

The hospital has raised $16,000 so far. Organizers hope to see that total reach $100,000 by the end of November.
